Sundance Day 7- Panel, People, and Party

Erica Harrell
Producer

Today we were featured in the Southern Utah Student Film Production Incentive Panel. It went really well, Marshall Moore moderated with Phil Peters, Cowboy Ted, Danny, Myself, Jake Johnson and Scott all given a turn at speaking about the incentive as well as A Monster in the Attic. The panel officially announced the incentive and our film as the pilot project for future feature films that will be shot in Kane County. Adam Rasumssen (2nd Assistant Camera) and Brant Reinhart (Production Assistant) were also able to attend the panel and it was really great to see them again. Kane County also launched their official website that promotes the Southern Utah Student Film Incentive, check it out here! It was really an honor to be asked by Marshall and Cowboy Ted to be a part of this panel and it was a really great experience for us.
Danny and I were interviewed by The Wasatch Journal and will be featured in their Red Rock Issue in April.
After the panel we had a great lunch with Phil and The Johnsons. Jake and his family then walked around Park City while Danny and I got some work done back at our condo.
After taking The Johnsons back to Salt Lake City, I got all dolled up and went to the Kodak party. It was a great party I saw Suzy Allen and Matthew Curtis of the Florida Film Commission and the Florida Film Festival respectively. Danny and Bryce are pretty sick and decided to stay back at the condo tonight. It was a fun party and I wasn’t out too late.
This festival has been such a great experience, but since I havent been home in over six weeks I am ready to get back to LA.

Reliving a Monster - Down with the Sickness

Danny Daneau
Director

Set Nurse Christine DaneauThe original idea for the Reliving a Monster series was not to go through a day by day account of the production process. That will be seen coming this January when we premiere our video podcast series, Making a Monster. The idea behind these postings have been to shed light on some of the moments that stand out for me while directing the production through the ups and downs of feature filmmaking. However, ending today, I will finish my recap of the first three days of production that were cut short due to an unexpected illness with our lead actor, Jake

It was beautiful Thursday morning in Kanab, Utah. I awoke to Day 3 with a renewed feeling of hope and excitement after getting a decent nights rest. Day 2 of production ran so smooth that many of my inner worries were melting away. Today was going to be an even lighter day as the one prior in terms of pages and camera setups I needed to get through. Things were definitely looking up.

Coming onto the film, Madison had already been booked for only two days of our shooting schedule to finish shooting her part in the film Jack and the Beanstock, starring Chevy Chase and James Earl Jones. So for today we would only have her on set for half the day before she needed to travel back to Los Angeles. This meant our entire second half of the day would be with just Jake shooting sequences that only starred the character of Darrell.

We were preparing to shoot our final shot with both actors when Jake looked at me and said, “Danny, I don’t feel good.” As the final words left his mouth, so did everything he ate that morning.

Reliving a Monster - Day Two not so Blue

Danny Daneau
Director

It was Day 2 of principle photography. Our driver, Brian Weeks, drove all through the night to get to Las Vegas and pick up a new generator. On our first day of production the other generator caught fire half through shooting, causing us to loose half the day and wrap early. As the cast and crew made their way to the set on this second day, there was an air of unease that murmured through the morning. An expectation that at any moment something else would happen that would stop our little film, far away from any production resources, dead in our tracks. Will we loose another day?

Luckily, that didn’t happen. Not only did the day go great, but we were able to make up some of the scenes we lost from the day before. The replacement generator was roaring away, unaffected by the scolding Utah heat. On top of all that, my actors and I were starting to find our groove. This was my biggest fear and it was melting away as the day went on.

We completed our second day having achieved 21 setups (a big feat in the world of film). I went back to the hotel on Cloud 9. It looked like we were going to be able to make it through production after all…

Little did I know what was waiting for me on Day 3.
